Introduction...

Rick was introduced into fishing by his mother around the age of 8, when he was taken to the Thames to fish for perch using worms on a bent safety pin as a hook, and a piece of wool as line!

In 1986 after several years of general fishing, including tench and winter pike fishing, Rick caught his first carp on a piece of free lined luncheon meat, from local club lake. From there his love for solely carp was born, and since that day he has fished for nothing else!

In 1986 Rick caught his first 20 lb carp, from Farnham Flint which has now become a well known Reading water. That same year Rick started full time work, which he did for 31 years, most of it shift work, around which he continued his angling.

His angling journey since those early days has taken him to many varied waters, from small intimate ponds, to 70 plus acre windswept big pits, all requiring different angling strategies. These waters have included, Spitfire Pool, Wingham, Vinnetrow, Dinton, Wellington, Kingsmead, Horton, Road Lake, Century, The Manor, and Yateley.

In recent years Rick’s interest lies in the solitary pursuit of big carp. In many cases, certain individual fish and he bases his angling around targeting them from pressured waters.

In 2022 Rick joined DT Baits. In his own words this move elevated his catches massively, and has been a huge changing point in his fishing, the number of bigger fish he’s had over the past 4 seasons has been incredibly impressive, with absolute confidence in DT he has taken the bait to many different waters and succeeded.  The use of the Cold Water Green Beast has turned his winter angling into a time of year that he really looks forward to, and again his catches in the hardest months of the year remain as consistent as all other times.

Carp Fishing tip

Use the best bait, simple rigs, but make sure your line lay is faultless, carp are more wary of lines than bait or rigs!

Recent fishing trip highlight

I arrived at the big lake at dawn one early March morning this year. Although the wind was a SW, it was cold, and with no sun, the temperatures were low, and fish into that didn’t seem the one. I had a look right up the far end, off the back of the wind, where the lake was calm, and within 10 minutes I had seen a fish show. To the right of this swim is a snaggy margin, and I drifted along there in my boat before putting any rods out. Almost immediately I saw a big mirror in the snags, deep down hugging the bottom, but moving and clearly active. I placed a Green Beast pop up just off these branches, on a really soft silty spot, but close to where I had seen the fish earlier. Within 2 hours I had a slow take on that rod, and soon after was looking at the same big mirror in my landing net, weighing 47.10 lbs!
